The Central Coast Watercolor Society is an independent group of artists, collectors, teachers, students and anyone interested in watercolor or watercolor -media.  We are located on the beautiful central coast of California in San Luis Obisbo County.  All CCWS monthly meetings and exhibitions are free and open to the public.

Award winning watermedia artist and international workshop instructor specializing in portraiture and figurative works.  Author of “Drawn to the Mirror, 365 days of Self Portraits,” 2010,  “Paintings and Drawings, 2011”;  Gold Medal winner in California Watercolor Association  42 National Exhibition.

Purpose: Central Coast Watercolor presents AQUARIUS 2014, a Pacific Regional Show of the best in water media painting, representing a wide range of direction and techniques, from experimental to traditional, and encourages support for watercolor as a vital, enduring and expressive medium.

CCWS Membership:

Meetings are held on the last Tuesday of the month, and include demonstrations, lectures, and workshop information. Signature membership is available to members (dues paid) who have been accepted into three Aquarius shows since l998.  Membership forms are available at our monthly meetings or by downloading the PDF form from the CCWSART website. General membership is $30 annually.

Awards:  Over $3000 in cash and merchandise anticipated.

Artists Eligibility:  This exhibition is open to artists residing in California, Oregon and Washington.  Artists juried into the exhibition must exhibit the painting for the entire length of the show.

Work Eligibility:    

This exhibition is limited to paintings that are watermedia on natural or synthetic paper or paperboard, unvarnished, and framed under plexiglass.  No stretched canvas or clayboard.  Collage, if used, must be in conjunction with the aqueous medium. Watermedia must be the dominant element.  No computer generated art, photography, prints, or reproductions.  Work must have been completed during the last three years, and not shown in a CCWS exhibit.  Paintings done in a class or workshop not eligible.  Source material must be original and not derived from any published images.

Entries must be framed and ready for hanging with wire, and protected under plexiglass. No sawtooth hangers.  Paintings should be matted with a minimum 2" mat, white or neutral color.  (Colored liners are acceptable.)  Framed size can not be more than 45" in either direction, and Frame size cannot be less that 14" in either direction.

Method of Selection:

The juror will make selections of no more than one painting per artist from digital images on a prepared DVD. Artists will be notified of the juror’s choice and chosen entries must then be submitted for the exhibition. Final juror selection will be from the actual submitted works with the juror’s right of refusal.

Digital File Requirements:

  1. It is to the artist’s advantage to submit a high quality image. Resolution 300 ppi with maximum 1200 pixels on longest side.

  2. Entries may be submitted as one or two digital images on a single CD or DVD.

  3. Image is to be cropped to show only painting, no matting, background or frame allowed on image.

  4. File Format must be JPG Files (Photos) shall be named as follows:

    1. (1)   Artist’s Name (Last Name and First Initial)

  5. (2)   Entry Number (1 or 2)

             Examples:    Smith A- 1    Smith A-2

Avoid using commas, or special characters other than the dash when naming the files/pictures .

  1. CD/DVD is to marked with the file name, image/painting size and the artist’s phone number. See below for example.

Image must represent the painting exactly.

      Signed copy of the Entry Form must accompany your CD/DVD, as will    as the entry fee.

Liability and Insurance:

Although the utmost care will be taken in handling digital media and paintings, CCWS and its representatives will not be responsible for damage or loss, whatever the cost.  Artists should carry their own insurance.  There will be no price changes after acceptance.


All work must be for sale. A  30% commission will be retained from all sales. Please price your works accordingly.

Entry and Fee Instructions:

  1. All CD/DVD must be received by 5:00 pm, Tuesday, April 10, 2014

  2. Entry fees are $25 for current CCWS members and $35 for non- members. Members must have membership paid at the time of submission. Membership fees can be paid with entry fee.

  3. One or two images/entries may be submitted. Only one painting will be accepted by the juror for exhibition.

  4. Fees must be paid by check or money order – No cash please.  Entry fees are non-refundable.

  5. Checks are to be payable to Central Coast Watercolor Society or CCWS.

  6. Mail CD/DVD, with entry forms, fee payment and a long self-addressed stamped envelope to:

Framing Information:

Framing guidelines must be followed for acceptance of paintings.

  1. Images:  Minimum Size (One Quarter Sheet).

  2. Glazing: Acrylic only. 

  3. Frame Materials: Simple wood, metal or plastic and properly reinforced.  Heavy or ornate carved frames are not appropriate.

  4. Diptychs and Triptychs:  These must be mounted within a single frame.

  5. Frame size: Simple narrow gallery frames with a 14 inch minimum or maximum of 45 inches on any side.

  6. Hardware: Accepted works must be securely wired and ready to hang.  No sawtooth hangers are allowed.

Shipping of Accepted Printing:

Detailed shipping instructions will be sent to accepted artists.  Artists will be responsible for a $25 handing fee and all shipping costs.
